Frozen Pitch call offs.

Post  Greenmanwalking on Mon Jan 16, 2012 8:25 am

Still can't get my head around the fact that the ref at Wisbech kept us at the ground for an extra 45 mins whilst he had a brew and a chat just in the of chance that the frozen area of the pitch would defrost.
Now i ain't no expert but i know that if it is frozen in the shade of the stand unless some sun gets on the pitch it will still be frozen in 40 minutes time.
That extra 45 minutes would of seen us back at Emerald Park for the kick off instead of turning up at half time.......obviously the ref had no where else to go and no mates to do it with !!
As the ground was a 'white out' in the morning surely a local ref could of done a pitch inspection at 11.00am,could of saved us the journey altogether.

Same thing happened to Soham yesterday - Made the trip to Waltham Abbey, having been told at 11am the pitch was OK, only to arrive at 1.30pm and find a small section in front of the main stand that was still white. The ref deemed it unplayable and wasn't going to change his mind despite both sides willing to play on it or give the pitch time to see if it would get better.
The annoying thing was NO pitch inspection had been made during the morning and we now face a midweek trip back to Waltham later this month!

Do Soham and Gorleston in these two instances, have any claim to their travelling expenses off the host clubs or is it a case of tough ****??

In Soham's case, I believe the answer is no - Had we still been in the Southern League though, as has previously happened, we would have been able to apply for compensation to the League, but the Ryman don't don't that.

And yes, the officials would have been paid.

Isn't it funny how the officials always seem '' to come up smelling of roses'' whilst the clubs remain in the mire!!

I believe the officials can claim a percentage of the fee and travel expenses.......we as a club can claim f**k all towards the minibus hire and the fuel.

Wisbech v Gorleston

Post  will the ref on Mon Mar 05, 2012 6:59 am

GMW.
To give you the facts.
I was the match referee for this game earlier in the season and yes I called it off. Me and my assistances arrived at 1.10pm on the Saturday and were asked to look at the pitch the moment we arrived. It was clear that the goal mouth in the shade from the stand was frozen and not going to defrost in time. By 1.20pm I made my decision to call the game off. We were invited into the club house for a cup of tea, and meet the Gorleston Sec who asked me if we'd look again at 2pm. She explained that the team had already arrived so would we mind looking again at 2pm. I was happy to oblige. At 2pm it was still frozen and my decision stood.
We claimed half match fee and travel expenses as we're allowed to do. The club had the option to have called the game off in the morning before Gorleston or we 3 had left and avoided as it turned out, a wasted journey.

When you're intent on critising a match official, please get your information correct first

Glad you got half your match fee and expenses,we were out of pocket to the tune of £140+ with minibus and fuel.
If you made a decision at 1.20pm as stated why did you oblige in looking again at 2.00pm,what were you going to prove.
You are in charge, you make the decision which you did,so why waste peoples time in waiting another 40 mins just to say 'no games off'.
I would have been more happier if you would have just called game off full stop so we could get back to watch more of our reserves game.

ps, so what part of my information is wrong did you not have a brew and a chat for 40 minutes ?

Maybe you should enquire to the home club about your mini bus cost, not me.
Your Sec asked me look at 2pm. I did. Not looking to prove anything.
Your original post emplies that I waited until 2pm when actually it happened at 1.20pm

Can i add my ''twopenneth'' here for what it's worth. Surely there should have been more responsibility on the shoulders of the Home club here. Firstly, the distance the visiting club was making and secondly, contacting the referee (Will the ref) about the condition of the ground and whether it was likely to get better as the morning progressed. Maybe a decision could have been made then re: calling in a local referee to assess the situation and therefore saving everybody the unnecessary journeys. I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but surely commonsense could have come into play in this instance! I see that Gorleston make the trip this Tuesday evening for the rearranged fixture and from the weather forecast it doesnt look very clever.

Its not just the team who had a wasted journey and fuel costs.

As a supporter I was just outside Wisbech when I got the call to say it was off, the home club must have known what their pitch is like and where the sun travels, could have arranged an early call off and saved me 120 miles and 3 hours wasted.

And then we are forced to play on a Tuesday night, one of our longest journeys, late night and all. Too late for me!

Looks like the situation was caused by not having a pitch inspection at an appropriate time!!
The travel distance/time of the away team should always be taken into consideration ........how would Wisbech Town FC feel in Gorlestons shoes ?.....no brainer!!!!

Now there’s a thing. When Wisbech were due to play at The Goldstar Ground in the bad weather the club called in a local contributory referee in the morning at the cusp of the point that Wisbech would have to travel. He checked the pitch and declared it unplayable, fair enough. Everyone saved wasted journey’s and costs. The club did pay the official his travelling costs from his base in Ipswich.
The game was subsequently arranged for a Tuesday evening in March/April which understandably Wisbech weren’t happy about, but that’s life.
Subsequently the league re-arranged the fixtures so that Wisbech now travel to the Goldstar on a Saturday and The Seasiders now travel to Haverhill midweek.
Haverhill is the Seasiders WORST journey, not distance but route, yet we have to travel in midweek while Wisbech are accommodated for Saturday travel.
Last season same thing The Seasiders travelled to ‘Dereham’ midweek to accommodate Wivenhoe not having to travel midweek.

While your on Will, how come the goalkeeper was awarded a free kick on Saturday for what looked like assault on The Seasiders No10. If that had happened outside the ground he would probably have been arrested.

Still can't work out why you,the man with the authority to call the game off at 1.20 still told Gorleston secretary you will have a look at 2.00pm,WHY you made a decision earlier so why give false hope.
Even when the manager's turned up at 1.50 there was still no official answer from the Wisbech staff.
Also i never implied i wanted monies returning from you or Wisbech,i just stated a fact that we as a club were left out of pocket to the tune of £140+.(so glad you got your monies,i slept better last night knowing that)
So please thoroughly read my posts before implying i vindicated you for reimbursement.

It is fairly obvious that the decision should have been made at 9.30 as we did to prevent Wisbech travelling. You should have shouted louder to avoid a Tuesday trek as they did I suppose ! Having seen Will "perform " a few times now I would put him only fractionally behind our friend Mr A in ability. It looks like we will be stuck with him at this level as I don't see him progressing to a higher level !

Wouldn't it have been great if the referee and his assistants had said something along the lines of:
As you've had no money through the gate, just give me a tenner/twenty/thirty to cover my petrol.

Kudos to the referee.

Who said that about flying pigs? Come on....who was it??
