MARK VINCENT 750 NOT OUT FOR THE BLOATERS

Incredibly, Mark Vincent will pull on a Great Yarmouth Town FC shirt for the 750th time this coming Saturday – some 28 years after he first did so and just a little way shy of his 50th birthday!
Vincent will achieve this remarkable footballing landmark in ‘The Bloaters’ Thurlow Nunn League First Division fixture at home to Cornard United (Wellesley Recreation Ground, 3pm).
Whatever the outcome of the match, it will be a day of celebration for Vincent and for Great Yarmouth Town, with the east Norfolk outfit determined to ensure that every fuss is made of a player widely described as a club ‘legend’.
Mark Vincent began his career with Town in season 1984/85. The central defender, who went on to captain the side, scored his first goal for the club in season 1986/87. He has since notched a further 77 times. And whilst it is true to say that these days he is, hardly surprisingly, more regularly in the reserves, Vincent has already hit the net twice for the second string this season. However, even now the Yarmouth stalwart still has something to offer the first team, as shown by his appearance in ‘The Bloaters’ 3-2 First Division Knockout Cup win over Fakenham Town only last month.
Almost entirely a ‘one-club-player’, Vincent did have a very brief spell away at Diss Town. But his heart has always remained with the black & amber of Great Yarmouth Town. He has retired a couple of times and enjoyed two previous testimonial occasions with matches arranged against Peterborough and Rushden & Diamonds at which both Max Griggs & Barry Fry spoke very highly of Vincent’s commitment to football. But even in retirement Mark Vincent has retained a keen interest in the fortunes of Yarmouth and in February this year, midway through a bruising season for ‘The Bloaters’ in 2011/12 when the club’s very existence was on the line, he played in a vital fundraising friendly match held at Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division neighbours Kirkley & Pakefield FC. It was shortly after this that the management team at Yarmouth persuaded ‘Vinny’ – as he is known by all – to pull on his boots in anger yet again.
Indeed, Mark Vincent has played under a number of managers at Yarmouth, the most well-known perhaps being Bill Punton and Paul Tong. Vincent will be reunited with Punton this Friday evening when he and his current manager, Mike Derbyshire, will join Punton around the table for the BBC Radio Norfolk football discussion show Local Report, on which he is a pundit (6.30pm).
Paul Tong meanwhile, now manager at Kirkley & Pakefield FC, paid a glowing tribute to Vincent.
“In my 25 years of management, Mark has to be the best player I have ever had the pleasure of managing” Tong said. “He showed a professional attitude that was second to none and his leadership qualities were there for all to see.
“Mark is a true legend in local football” Tong continued, “and I believe it will be a long time before we ever see another of his kind. He is also a true gentleman, both on and off the pitch. I feel privileged to have managed such a player.”
Present ‘Bloaters’ boss, Mike Derbyshire, is equally full of praise.
“I’ve not known Vinny as long as most people at the club because I’ve only been here for a little over 12 months and he has only been back with us for seven” he said, “yet in that short time, he has demonstrated just what an important figure he is to everyone involved with us.
“Mark was and still is a very talented player and to have maintained his fitness to be able to play at this level at his age [as I’m sure he won’t mind me saying] is a reflection of his dedication to the game and to Great Yarmouth Town” Derbyshire went on. “The word ‘legend’ is often bandied about a little too readily these days in my opinion but in Vinny’s case, it is totally justified.
“Mark is essentially a ‘football man’ – genuine, honest and an all-round good guy. I am delighted that he has remained with the club this season, using his vast experience to help mentor what is a very young squad of players across the whole senior set-up – First Team, Reserves and u18s.”
Derbyshire encouraged all ‘Bloaters’ fans young & old – and all fans of local football – to make the effort to come down and support Mark Vincent in action this Saturday on what will be a very special occasion.
“If anyone deserves the support of people in local football, it is Mark.”

This man is/was an absolute ''gem'' to manage. An example to young and old (at our level) on how to approach the game both on and off the field. Cannot praise the man high enough. An honour to be one of his friends

Re: MARK VINCENT 750 NOT OUT FOR THE BLOATERS
Soham's Michael Simpson made his 500th appearance for Soham during their 7-2 home victory against Sudbury today.
I thought that was some sort of achievement in itself, until I saw this about Mark.
Loyalty is hard to find in football these days with a number of players preferring to 'chase' the £££ so when we do find players like this they should be congratulated and awarded.
Well done to both
