RIDGEONS PREMIER DIVISION PREVIEW SATURDAY 17TH december 2011

CRC V BRANTHAM ATHLETIC
The Scholars have hit a vein of decent form recently and will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to six games against second in the table Brantham. 19 goals in that five match run speaks for itself although they have conceded nine, three points here could push them above current third place Norwich United who have a day off. Their visitors after a ten match unbeaten run have now lost twice in their last four, but they are the closest to the current leaders and can’t afford to slip up again. They will enjoy the Abbey Stadium pitch and this could be a very tight affair.
DEREHAM TOWN V DISS TOWN
The Magpies recent poor form has seen them slip out of contention at the top and they will be looking to halt a run of three straight defeats here, two of them at Aldiss Park where they have conceded nine goals in those two games. Their visitors have picked up just one win in their last eight games but the four defeats they have suffered have all been close affairs and they haven’t been involved in any high scoring affairs, they have conceded more than two goals just twice so far and this could be another tight affair against a host side desperate for at least a point.
GORLESTON V FELIXSTOWE & WALTON UNITED
These two have yet to meet this season and it could be a difficult afternoon for the Suffolk side against a home team currently enjoying a decent run, although they have drawn their last two against sides around them in the table. The visitors are in the lower echelon of sides but have the games in hand to climb the table, if they can take points from them. They have lost just once in the last six and have stopped leaking soft goals so they will travel looking to take something from the game but they could find the going tough here.
HADLEIGH UNITED V MILDENHALL TOWN
This could be billed the unpredictable versus the inconsistent and choose which is which. The home side are on a decent run having lost just once in their last five and that against the league leaders and they do score goals. Their visitors have won just once in their last nine which included a run of four straight defeats and they haven’t travelled well recently. Hadleigh have lost five at home this season and the ‘Hall have won five times on the road, just one point separates them at the start of play having played the same amount of games so this will be a big match for both.
HAVERHILL ROVERS V FC CLACTON
Haverhill have surprised many who thought they would be one of the top sides this season but the early season promise has subsided somewhat and they now sit below mid-table while their visitors who some thought might struggle sit in the top ten. The Seasiders have lost just twice away from The Rush Green Bowl while the home side have lost four times at the New Croft, including last week. A difficult game to call for the pundits, the visitors won the reverse fixture so may just have the edge here against a side that has leaked eight goals in those last two defeats.
KIRKLEY & PAKEFIELD V NEWMARKET TOWN
The home sides form hasn’t been sparkling recently with just one win in their last four and that against the basement side, but it shines compared to their visitors who need a rapid turn round in fortunes if they are to avoid the drop. Both sides have beaten Gt Yarmouth in recent weeks by big scores but Newmarket have lost by big scores to often for comfort having shipped ten in their last two games. A home win would push the Royals closer to the mid-table group while any point for the Jockeys at present would be a welcome relief.
STANWAY ROVERS V ELY CITY
The home side will be looking to end a run that has seen them collect just one point from a possible 15 after a run of eleven games without defeat and will feel this is an ideal opportunity. Ely lost for the first time since August a fortnight ago and the three defeats suffered have all been away from The Unwin Ground. Both have plenty to play for, a home win could push Rovers up into a top eight spot while a win on the road could see the Robins up into third place and they would hope set them on the road for another extended unbeaten run after their win last week.
WALSHAM Le WILLOWS V WIVENHOE TOWN
There are massive games when chasing titles but both these clubs will see this as important as any title challenging game. It’s 18th versus 17th, five points between them with the home side having five games in hand. Should The Dragons take all three points the Willows would need to win at least three of those five games, while a home win would see the gap down to two points with fifteen available to Paul Smith’s side. Neither manager will underestimate the other and both will be aware three points would be a massive big boost going into Christmas.
WISBECH TOWN V GT. YARMOUTH TOWN
Is the question, how many, or can the Bloaters pull off a shock result. Nothing in football is ever certain but a home win may be as close as it gets. A plus 17 goal difference against a minus 63 difference. The Fenmen with at least one game in hand on the four sides above them could get up into the top three, dependent on other results and would definitely overtake the current third placed side. For Great Yarmouth it is a case of keep believing and hope the tide will turn, a decent showing here would give them confidence boost no matter what the result.
WOODBRIDGE TOWN V WROXHAMThe last time the Yachtsmen lost away, or rather the only time they have lost away was over two months ago and that by a single goal at second placed Brantham, they currently head the form table with six from six wins and look odds on favourites to lift the title with only half the season gone. Woodpecker’s manager Mark Scopes has never shied away from a challenge and he will see this as a great opportunity to try and dent the visitor’s title ambitions. They are the leagues fourth highest goal scorers but their goals against column is not great and their visitors are experts at exploiting any weakness in defences.

If Carlsberg did football teams Gorleston would have been in the drip tray today,and Felixstowe top of the glass.

GMW - I thought The Seasiders played very well yesterday, I was more pleased with the second half than the first when they scored three goals. Looked solid at the back in the second half when The Greens were on the up and defended from the front. You'll be pleased to know I had a pint of Carlsberg when I got back to the 'stowe!
